The hamlet of Igloolik will be able to clean up its dump site thanks to a Greener Tomorrow grant.

The $3,956 grant will allow the community to host a clean-up event for the site, says Paul Delaney, Igloolik’s Northern store manager.

“The Greener Tomorrow initiative demonstrates to the community that we are a business that also cares about the environment for which we all share,” said Delaney. “By giving back, it shows our commitment in the communities that we operate in.”

Greener Tomorrow is a program that is run by Northern/NorthMart that aims to eliminate the use of plastic bags. To encourage the use of environmentally friendly alternatives, customers are charged a fee each time a non-reusable plastic bag is used. Unique to the industry, the program fees are accumulated over the year, with 100 percent of the funds returning to the community to support environmental and social programs.
