“I can’t believe I chose the one with less sugar!”

That was the surprised reaction of Martha, who participated in a recent Health Happy taste test in Sanikiluaq, NU.

Participants were presented with regular products and Health Happy alternatives, including low sodium crackers and Best Value Reduced Sugar Juice Crystals. Based on the results, two out of five (41%) preferred the lower sodium crackers and two-thirds (66%) of participants preferred the Best Value Reduced Sugar Juice Crystals.

“I was surprised that even the kids chose the less sugar drink mix,” said Rita Krstevitch, the Sanikiluaq Northern store’s Grocery Manager. “It is nice to see we offer tasteful drinks at a great price, for a healthier choice.”

Ever since the Health Happy program was introduced to Northern and NorthMart stores in January, the consumption of healthier food products has increased by nearly 15%. The purpose of the Health Happy program is to promote a healthier lifestyle by offering products with lower amounts of salt, sugar, caffeine, and fat content.
